Our history

The Sustainable Restaurants Network was founded in 2013 and soon celebrates 10 years. We have had an amazing journey. Here are some of our highlights.

So, the initiative is founded in 2013 and initially gathers a group of stakeholders eager to take the lead in their respective areas. In the supplier section we have Saltå Kvarn, Kafferosteriet Löfbergs, Diskteknik, Lantmännen Cerealia and KRAV. The restaurants that have contributed are Mässrestauranger, Zócalo and Högskolerestauranger AB as well as Arlanda Gymnasiet. Today, the steering group consists of WWF, Mässrestauranger, Oddbird, Destination Sigtuna, Kungliga Djurgårdens Intressenter and U&We.

In 2015/16 the network starts in Stockholm and Göteborg with regular contact days consisting of workshops within food, environment and humanity, economy and certifications, communication. Together with sustainability coaches from Sustainergies, current analysis is carried out at every restaurant and we work with our toolkit to develop the sustainability on spot. We also communicate our work in the restaurants and through different social media.

During autumn 2017 the network starts in Malmö and Umeå as well. The plan is to keep spreading the concept to more restaurants in Stockholm, Göteborg, Malmö and Umeå, as well as to other cities such as Karlstad, Örebro, Uppsala, Linköping… any city where there are passionate and engaged restaurants wanting to cooperate for a sustainable restaurant business!

In September 2018 we have our five year anniversary! We invite members to a big party at Södra Teatern’s champagne bar in Stockholm, where we are inspired by Paul Svensson from Fotografiska, among others. During the evening we crown winners in the categories Sustainable Restaurant of the Year, Sustainable Innovator of the Year, Sustainable Communicator of the Year, Sustainable Driving Spirit of the Year and Sustainable Menu of the Year. What a night!

During the spring of 2020, the covid-19 pandemic puts a damper on the entire restaurant industry and of course also the network’s physical meetings. We rearrange and organize digital meetings and support our restaurants in, among other things, personnel matters, such as in the campaign Farmer looks for staff. The pandemic still has, in the fall of 2022, a major impact on the restaurant industry, but we have been able to resume our physical meetings. However, we have continued to also have digital meetings, not least to be able to “meet” restaurants outside of Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and Umeå.

Working with the Sustainable Restaurants Network has been an exciting journey, and we look forward to continuing to do it together with our members!

When we feel inspired, learn something important or want to talk about what we do we share it on Facebook. You can also find us on Twitter and Instagram. However, this is not a one-sided communication! If you want to show us something good, inform us or spread the news than like, tag and share on our social media channels!
